I’d suggest acupuncture, diet and exercise. A healthy diet will help prevent acne. Acupuncture works well to clear up break outs. Also avoid any lotions or makeups that have heavy perfumes, coloring or other artificial chemicals that your skin may be sensitive to. These are much safer than the methods you asked about and much cheaper as well. If you do decide to go with one of those treatments you asked about, make sure you go to a qualified professional with a good reputation because if they screw up you could end up with scarring on your face or other body parts (depending on where the acne is).

Treatment depends on the cause of the acne.

Some acne is caused by dead skin cells and dirt. Dry skin and improper cleaning lead to dry pimples often found on the arms & legs. Oily skin that is not properly cared for will result in wetter pimples often found on the face. Getting a exfoliated & moisturized will really help.

Sometimes a pimple will be due to a different blockage. Shaved or plucked hair can result in pimples b/c the hair is trapped and becomes irritating to the skin. Be careful to use a fresh razor to avoid microscopic abrasions & cuts, and then follow up with proper moisturizing & exfoliating can help reduce these common pimples. The hair may have to be removed for the inflammation to go away.

You can also develop acne caused by bacterial infections. These often are deeper and more painful. Yeast is a common one and somewhat difficult to treat. Monitor your diet and reduce the sugars. You can also get topical creams to combat the buildup of bacteria. Witch Hazel, Peroxide based cleansers, alcohol, and vaginal yeast creams can be used to combat these pimples. A good dermatologist would be a good idea when dealing with bacterial infections.

Some acne is caused by hormones and none of the above options will have any effect. This is normal and will typically fluctuate with your hormones. I would chart to see if this is the case and then talk to your Dr about your hormones & treatment options if there is a pattern.

Popping a pimple is a tricky thing. You can damage the skin more, cause the bacteria to burst through the pore into the underlying tissue, develop staph infections, and contaminate surrounding pores. Most common pimples can be “popped” by using the eye of a needle to apply pressure around the pore’s opening. Be sure to wash the needle and the skin surface afterwards before moving to another pore.
