What is the Independent and Dependent Variable for this problem, also state the null hypothesis?

The men and women were given a survey on depression at the beginning of the treatment, and the same men and women were given the the exact same survey at the end of the treatment. The research stated that at the end of treatment women were reporting less depressive symptoms than men.
Also if possible state the null hypothesis, and the research hypothesis.
