Red light treatment at salon?

When she put the thing on my face it felt like I was being shocked and I asked her what it was and she showed me the control panel and it was set to deep wrinkles. She saw that I was concerned and turned it down and went over my whole face. What was this thing? It actually worked on the spot where she had it set to deep wrinkles, I only have a smile wrinkle on my left side now. I just do not understand what the machine and lighting is doing, was it a laser? If it is only light therapy why does it feel like an electrical shock? I would like info on this thing before I go back and do my whole face on the deep wrinkle setting.
